Knowing where the studs are in a wall can be extremely handy when hanging pictures, putting up new shelves, or starting an addition. A good stud finder can make the difference between a successful DIY home project and a disaster. That's why a stud finder is an important tool.

The device offers three different stud scan depth settings: 0.5 inch, 1 inch, and 1.5 inch. It can locate the center and edges of wood and metal studs up to 1.5 inches deep. To minimize false positives, always start your scan in the 0.5 inch mode first.

In addition to stud detection, the tool can also detect iron nails, wires, copper, aluminum, and other metals in the wall, with a detection depth of up to 2.36 inches. After detecting the center of an object, use the Metal Scan mode to determine if it's a wood stud, metal stud, or AC wire.

The Wire Warning detection feature indicates the presence of live, unshielded electrical wiring up to 2 inches deep. For safety, this wall scanner always detects and indicates the presence of live AC wires, regardless of the mode.

To use the Stud Scan mode, first calibrate the tool by placing the entire device against the wall and pressing and holding the calibration button until the reducing bars disappear and a beep confirms the calibration is complete. Then, slowly move the stud finder along the wall. When the signal bar is full and the beep is loudest, you've found the center of an object. Mark it with a pencil and switch to Metal Scan mode to confirm it's a stud.
